BURY man Jimmy Hill is the new leader of the pride at Peel Lions Club.

It’s his fourth time as president of the Peel branch of the international organisation.

He has been a member for 35 years and along with fellow-members Iain Coughlin and Peter Hepburn recently received the Melvin Jones Award — named after the founder of Lions International — for his longstanding commitment.

He said: “It’s always an honour to be president of a Lions club. It shows that the team has confidence in you.

“At Peel Lions you always know that you’ve got a great team of lads behind you so it’s always a pleasure to run the club for 12 months. The Melvin Jones Award was just the icing on the cake. It was a very special surprise.”

Mr Hill, aged 61, of Oxford Street, Bury, will oversee the club’s continued charity work, including the annual three-legged race in Ramsbottom on Saturday, August 16 and a planned fundraiser for Mind later in the year.

Peel Lions Club meets every Wednesday at 8pm at the Royal British Legion, Central Street, Ramsbottom. New members are welcome.
